Qualifications of Physician Assistants

Job duties for Physician Assistants may include but are not limited to:
  • Serve as a Specialty Care credentialed Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner providing primarily gastroenterology and hepatology medical services to patients ranging in age from 18 through geriatric. The Physician Assistance/Nurse Practitioner will serve in the Gastroenterology clinic, Mike O’Callaghan Military Medical Center, under the supervision of the Medical Director of Gastroenterology, Clinic Nurse Manager, and the Flight Commander.
  • The contractor is required to abide by the Medical Staff Bylaws upon acceptance of privileges to practice.
  • Provide a full range of direct patient care, outcome-based Physician Assistant/Nurse
  • Practitioner services in accordance with privileges granted by the MTF (e.g., provide general screening and medical care and examinations of patients for routine, acute, and chronic conditions involving any and all organ systems; provide immunizations; diagnose, treat, and counsel patients as indicated).
  • Diagnose and treat patients with common acute conditions, chronic illnesses, or minor trauma within accepted protocols, clinical practice guidelines, and/or in consultation with a physician.
  • Examine patients and perform initial work-up and assessment; determine the need for and order the according laboratory tests, radiology studies, and other diagnostic tests; interpret the total medical evidence, incorporating information into an accurate diagnosis or appraisal; institute proper treatment and patient care

  • Cleans gastroenterological area and helps to clean procedure and clinic rooms following gastroenterology procedures. Properly disposes of contaminated supplies and equipment.
  • Disposes of biohazardous waste per infection control guidelines.
  • Performs high level disinfection (HLD) of endoscopes in the instrument processing area such as washing, assembling, and sterilizing instruments and ensuring they are functional.
  • Stores instruments and supplies, monitors dated packs and supplies to ensure sterility.
  • Can properly utilize the endoscopic re-processor. Follows manufacturer’s IFUs (instructions for use) and works in compliance with TJC requirements.
  • Knows how to test the high-level disinfectant for efficacy and can document the test results. Follows manufacturer’s IFUs and works in compliance with TJC requirements.
  • Can transport scope following procedure from procedure room to disinfection area in accordance with TJC requirements.
  • Responsible for the care, identification, and labeling of specimens and the delivery of specimens to pathology.
  • Screens and checks-in patients; escorts and transports patients to treatment areas safely using wheelchairs, gurneys, and other means.
  • Obtains, monitors, and records physiological measurements in patients EMR as required.
  • Will train HCW how to start and discontinuing intravenous (IV’s) and must be able to chart in patient EMR.
  • Is proficient at lab draws and can transport to lab per hospital protocols.
  • Utilizes safety measures as required, including masks, gloves, etc.
  • Prepares procedure rooms and preoperative bays, excluding medications.
  • Speaks clearly and can communicate with physicians during procedures.
  • Works cooperatively with co-workers, students and with all patient contact.
  • Provides care within ethical and legal boundaries.
  • Keeps accurate inventory of supplies and communicates with supply custodian when supplies are needed to ensure ability to perform patient care.
  • Knows how to operate all equipment in clinic, Pre-operative, intraoperative, and postoperative area.
  • Assists with GI patient recovery following procedures, including assistance in identifying and managing post-procedural complications.
  • Attends and performs all required CBTs, department training and maintains knowledge of safety procedures within the facility. Completes orientation, competency verification, and educational programs in accordance with facility and unit specified guidelines.
  • Participates in committees, functions and other meetings as directed. Provides relevant and timely information to these groups if asked.
  • Assists with process improvement initiatives.
  • Participates in customer service initiatives, quality projects, and medical readiness activities, designed to enhance health services.
  • Maintains or assists with health record input, storage, and retrieval.
  • Mail letters to patients.
  • Answer T-Cons via Electronic Health Messaging Pool.

Treatments include, but are not limited to, IV sedation (conscious sedation), IV cannulation, and IV therapy (including antibiotics and blood products).
  • Provide pre-procedural counseling and education for patients planning to undergo GI procedures.
  • On their arrival, prepare patients for procedures, obtain and document pertinent medical history and physical assessment.
  • Safely transfer patients to and from procedure areas with the assistance of other staff.
  • Assist with GI procedures, to include the provision of conscious sedation.
  • Be familiar with, and when required, assist in GI procedures to include upper endoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, ERCP, esophageal pH testing, paracentesis, liver biopsy, and PEG placement. Emergent procedures include endoscopy for GI bleeding control, foreign body removal, and cholangitis.
  • Provides on-call coverage during both regular business hours and after regular business hours, such as overnights, weekends, and holidays, as scheduled, to support urgent and emergent procedures

Qualifications Education:
  • Associate degree required
  • Graduate of an accredited program by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) or Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)
Certifications:
  • Current Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) certification from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certifications required
Experience:
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in critical care and neonatal respiratory care within the past three (3) years

Key Responsibilities As a member of our team, you will:
  • Perform complex respiratory care procedures independently
  • Collaborate with physicians and clinical staff to develop patient treatment plans
  • Provide emergency and critical respiratory interventions
  • Administer respiratory therapies and perform blood gas analyses
  • Operate and troubleshoot various respiratory equipment, including ventilators, nebulizers, oxygen systems, and sterilization units
  • Monitor and maintain respiratory equipment, reporting any maintenance needs
  • Perform airway management techniques and administer prescribed medications
  • Conduct patient assessments, document clinical findings, and provide therapeutic recommendations
  • Deliver oxygen and respiratory equipment to designated units
  • Educate patients on breathing exercises and respiratory therapy protocols

  • Interview donors, take vital signs, and draw/test blood for donor screening
  • Train and supervise new staff or volunteers in phlebotomy procedures
  • Maintain cleanliness and inventory of the phlebotomy area; document all samples per SOP
  • Educate patients on specimen collection procedures and requirements
  • Conduct CLIA-waived tests (e.g., pregnancy tests) per FDA and lab standards

  • Monitor donors for reactions and initiate emergency procedures if necessary
  • Perform donor apheresis, blood processing, labeling, inventory, and shipment

  • Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association or military equivalent
  • Intermediate computer skills with ability to manage electronic records and data analysis tools

  • Provides individual and group therapy, using various evidence based/informed modalities as clinically indicated to include brief problem-focused psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and client-centered therapy for children, adolescents, and family members.
  • Assesses and provides crisis intervention for children, adolescents, and family members undergoing unusual psychologically related stresses.
  • Provides psychological and clinical consultation to other professionals and paraprofessionals through established consultation channels.
  • Screens and interviews children, adolescents, and family members, and utilizes psychometric instruments in the assessment of psychological disorders typically affecting children and adolescents; performs biopsychosocial evaluations
  • Oversees and interprets appropriate tests, using expert knowledge of general and specific concepts, principles, procedures, and practices relating to the psychological functioning of children, adolescents, and family members
  • Provides expert professional consultation to primary care providers and other professional staff regarding the psychological functioning of children, adolescents, and families.
